Summerland celebrates Canada Day

Summerlanders gathered for Canada Day festivities on July 1

It was a time of celebration as hundreds attended the Canada Day events in Summerland’s Memorial Park on July 1.

The event was held to mark Canada’s 157th birthday.

Summerland’s celebrations were organized by the Summerland Legion and Destination Summerland. The day included a Kiwanis pancake breakfast, a flag-raising ceremony, comments from elected officials and dignitaries, a barbecue and Canada Day cake, events for children and musical entertainment.

“Let’s do our best to build a stronger country together,” said Dan Albas, Member of Parliament for Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola.

In past years, Albas has said Canada Day is his favourite day of the year.

Dan Ashton, MLA for the riding of Penticton, said Canada is an incredible country, with much to offer.

“We have to be thankful for what we have in Canada,” he said.

Summerland mayor Doug Holmes said he has visited more than 80 countries.

“I have yet to find one that’s better than Canada,” he said.

Sally Pierce, executive director of the Summerland Chamber of Commerce, the day is a time to appreciate Canada.

“Canada Day is a day to reflect on what it means to be Canadian,” she said.
